Therapy for Moms in Arizona to Heal Their Own Childhood Trauma

Wild Bloom Therapy and Wellness helps moms work through their own childhood trauma so they can understand their parenting patterns, respond differently to their children, and break generational cycles.

Maybe you became a mom and suddenly found yourself reacting in ways you never expected. Your child’s behavior pushes a button you didn’t know you had. You hear yourself saying something your own parent used to say, or you become overwhelmed by your child’s big emotions. You feel an intense need to control a situation that, logically, isn’t dangerous.

Or maybe you’re being intentional about parenting in the complete opposite way you were raised, and you’re exhausted from trying so hard to make sure your kids have a different experience. You’re always thinking, “What if I mess my kids up the way I was messed up?”

That’s a heavy fear that so many moms have, but having childhood trauma doesn’t mean you’re destined to repeat it. You can understand where your patterns came from and learn new ways of responding.

Therapy can help you process what happened to you, recognize how those experiences show up in your life today, and develop healthier ways of responding to yourself and your children.

Certified Perinatal Mental Health Specialist (PMH-C)To better serve moms like you, I’ve pursued advanced training and certification as a Certified Perinatal Mental Health Specialist (PMH-C).  At Wild Bloom Therapy and Wellness, I also offer therapy for moms struggling with postpartum depression, anxiety, and birth trauma.

It’s about finding who you are now.

Why Does My Childhood Show Up in My Parenting?

You may have spent years thinking you’ve moved past something. Then you have a child and suddenly, an old feeling is back. Motherhood can bring childhood experiences to the surface because parenting puts you in situations that can touch some very old emotional wounds.

Your child’s crying might trigger feelings of helplessness. Their defiance might bring up memories of being punished for having your own opinions. Their need for reassurance might feel overwhelming if you weren’t given much emotional support growing up. Or maybe you simply realize that the way you learned to cope with difficult emotions isn’t working anymore.

You might notice:

Sometimes the hardest part isn’t even knowing what happened.

It’s recognizing:

“I don’t want to respond this way, but I don’t know how to respond differently.”

That’s something therapy can help with.

You Are Not Your Parents

One of the most painful fears for a mom with childhood trauma can be:

“What if I become them?”

But noticing a pattern is not the same as repeating it.

You have the ability to pause.

You have the ability to reflect.

You have the ability to repair.

You have the ability to learn.

There’s no rule book that says you have to get parenting right every single time to create a different experience for your children. Healthy parenting isn’t about never getting triggered, never raising your voice, or never making a mistake.

It’s about becoming more aware of what’s happening inside you, so you have more choices in how you respond. You can make a mistake without becoming the person who hurt you.

Breaking a cycle doesn't require perfection. It starts with awareness, compassion, and a willingness to do something differently.

When Religious Trauma Is Part of Your Story

For a lot of the moms I see in my therapy practice, childhood experiences and religious trauma are deeply related. Maybe you grew up with messages about obedience, worthiness, sin, punishment, purity, gender roles, or what a “good” girl, woman, or mom was supposed to be.

Maybe emotions and questioning weren’t encouraged. Maybe love or approval felt conditional. Or maybe you’re now navigating a faith transition and realizing that some of the beliefs you grew up with affected the way you see yourself, your relationships, or your role as a mother.

This all can make things even more complicated when you’re raising your own kids.

You may find yourself asking:

“What do I actually believe?”

“What do I want my children to learn?”

“Which parts of how I was raised do I want to keep?”

“Which parts do I want to leave behind?”

The good news is, you don’t have to figure those questions out all at once and you don’t have to throw away every part of your upbringing to create something different.

Therapy can help you examine the beliefs and experiences you’ve inherited, identify what aligns with your values today, and work through religious trauma or faith-transition grief when those experiences are affecting you now.

Breaking the Cycle Doesn't Mean Parenting Perfectly

When you’ve experienced childhood trauma, it’s easy to turn “I want to do better” into “I can never mess up.”

But it’s important to understand that perfection is not the goal.

You’re going to get frustrated and have bad days. Sometimes you’ll make mistakes and react before you have time to think. Your kids are guaranteed to have difficult experiences. Your job as a parent isn’t to protect them from every difficult thing life throws their way.

It’s to create a relationship where there is room for connection, safety, boundaries, accountability, and repair. Sometimes breaking a cycle looks less like never doing the thing your parents did and more like:

You notice it. → You pause. → You respond differently or repair when you don’t. → You learn from it. → You try again.

That’s meaningful change.

How Therapy Can Help You Break Unhealthy Parenting Patterns

Therapy can give you space to understand your own experiences without making you relive everything before you’re ready.

Together, we can work on:

Understanding your triggers

Recognize situations, emotions, or behaviors that activate old responses so you can begin responding with greater awareness.

Processing Childhood Trauma

Explore unresolved experiences and the ways they may still affect your emotions, relationships, boundaries, or sense of self.

Regulating Big Emotions

Develop practical tools for managing your own emotional responses so you can stay more grounded when your children are struggling.

Challenging Old Beliefs

Examine beliefs about yourself, relationships, parenting, worth, and responsibility that may have come from your childhood.

Building Healthier Responses

Create new ways of communicating, setting boundaries, handling conflict, and responding to your children.

Learning to Repair

Understand that reconnecting after a difficult moment matters. You can apologize, take responsibility, and rebuild connection without drowning in shame.
