Religious trauma occurs when beliefs, teachings, or church culture cause emotional or psychological harm. It is especially common in high-control systems where obedience, purity, and perfection are valued over authenticity, autonomy, and emotional safety.
For many women, religious trauma becomes embodied. When your body, emotions, thoughts, or identity are heavily controlled from a young age, you may learn to disconnect from your instincts and inner sense of safety.
Healing often involves rebuilding trust in yourself, reconnecting with your body and emotions, and developing a sense of identity outside of fear, shame, or external authority.
Name what you’re feeling, make sense of your reactions, and stop wondering if you’re “just being dramatic” for having the reactions you do.
