What is Identity Formation? (specific to religious trauma)

Identity formation is the process of developing a sense of who you are, what you believe, what matters to you, and how you want to move through the world.

This process normally evolves over time through exploration, life experiences, relationships, and personal choice. But in high-demand religious environments, identity is often shaped very early around obedience, roles, expectations, and belonging. For many women leaving Mormonism, identity formation involves learning who they are outside of the roles, rules, and beliefs they were taught to prioritize.
