3 Communication Tips For A Better Marriage

Conflict in relationships is inevitable, but how we navigate it can make all the difference in maintaining love and connection. In this blog post, we’ll explore three communication tips to help you embrace conflict as an opportunity for growth and strengthen your bond with your partner, regardless of your communication style. (Don’t know what conflict styles are? Check out my free e-book here)

Communication Tips 1: Open Communication

Clear and open communication lays the groundwork for understanding and resolution in any relationship. One effective communication formula is the “I” statement technique. Begin by stating the facts: “I noticed…” This helps to keep the focus on your observations rather than placing blame on your partner. Follow up with expressing your emotions: “I feel…” This allows you to share your feelings without judgment or criticism. Finally, communicate your needs in a positive and actionable way: “I need…” This empowers both partners to work towards a solution together.

A communication formula I share with all of my clients is…

I noticed… (state the facts)

I feel… (share your emotions)

I need… (say what you need in a positive and actionable way)

*notice that all these statements start with “I” and not “you”

For example, you might say, “I noticed you have been leaving your clothes on the floor after you shower. I feel frustrated when that happens because I really like having a clean house. I need you to put your clothes in the hamper after you shower, please.”

Communication Tips 2: Active Listening

When conflicts arise, active listening is essential for creating understanding and empathy. Make a conscious effort to listen to your partner without interrupting or formulating your response. Validate their feelings and show genuine interest in understanding their perspective. By prioritizing listening over speaking, you create a safe space for open communication and mutual respect.

In Practice, Active Listening Looks Like…
  1. Maintaining Eye Contact: Active listeners maintain eye contact with the speaker, showing that they are engaged and focused on what the speaker is saying.
  2. Nodding and Using Affirmative Cues: Active listeners use nodding, smiling, and other affirmative cues to show that they are paying attention and understanding the speaker’s message.
  3. Reflecting and Paraphrasing: Active listeners reflect and paraphrase what the speaker has said to ensure they have understood correctly. They might say things like, “So what I’m hearing is…” or “It sounds like you’re saying…”
  4. Asking Open-Ended Questions: Active listeners ask open-ended questions to encourage the speaker to elaborate on their thoughts and feelings. These questions show genuine interest in understanding the speaker’s perspective.
  5. Avoiding Interruptions: Active listeners avoid interrupting the speaker and wait for natural pauses to ask clarifying questions or offer their own insights. They prioritize the speaker’s need to express themselves fully.

Communication Tips 3: Empathy

Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. Cultivating empathy allows you to step into your partner’s shoes and see the world from their perspective. Practice empathy by acknowledging your partner’s emotions and demonstrating compassion and understanding. This builds trust and connection, even in the midst of conflict. By incorporating these communication tips into your relationship, you can transform conflict into an opportunity for growth and connection.
