What is a Conflict Avoidance?

Conflict avoidance is the tendency to avoid disagreement, tension, difficult conversations, or emotional discomfort. A lot of women who were raised in high demand religions learn conflict avoidance as a survival strategy in environments where disagreement feels unsafe, disrespectful, selfish, or threatening to relationships and belonging.

Conflict avoidance can look like:

  • staying silent to keep peace
  • suppressing emotions
  • overexplaining yourself
  • apologizing excessively
  • avoiding boundaries
  • agreeing when you actually disagree

Although conflict avoidance may temporarily reduce anxiety, it often creates resentment, emotional disconnection, and loss of authenticity over time.
