Cognitive dissonance is the emotional discomfort that happens when two beliefs, values, or experiences conflict with each other.
For example, someone may deeply value honesty and authenticity while also trying to remain loyal to teachings that no longer feel true to them. Holding both realities at once can create anxiety, confusion, guilt, or emotional overwhelm.
Many women in faith transitions describe cognitive dissonance as feeling mentally “split” between what they were taught and what they are beginning to recognize within themselves.
