How to Overcome Defensiveness in Marriage

In any relationship, conflict and disagreements are inevitable. However, how we handle these moments of tension can make all the difference! One common barrier to effective communication is defensiveness. Defensiveness in marriage is rooted in feelings of self-protection and can halt understanding, escalate conflicts, and strain relationships.

Understanding Defensiveness in Marriage:

Defensiveness is a natural response to feeling attacked or criticized. When faced with conflict, our natural cave-man reaction may be to protect ourselves. This often leads to counterattacks or excuses that limit open and kind communication. Thus starting a nasty cycle of attacking and defending that hurts safety and trust in a relationship.

5 Essential Tips to Overcome Defensiveness In Marriage:

  1. Self-Awareness: The first step towards overcoming defensiveness is to develop self-awareness. Take a moment to recognize when you start feeling defensive during a conversation. Pay attention to physical cues like increased heart rate or tension in your body. By becoming aware of these signs, you can interrupt the automatic defensive response.
  2. Active Listening: Practice active listening by fully engaging with your partner’s perspective without interrupting or crafting your response. Show genuine interest in understanding their point of view. This approach helps create an culture where both partners feel heard and validated.
  3. Assume Positive Intentions: Instead of assuming the worst about your partner’s words or actions, choose to assume positive intentions. This mindset shift allows you to approach conflicts with empathy and seek clarification before reacting defensively. Remember, your partner is likely not trying to attack you personally.
  4. “I” Statements: When expressing your concerns or feelings, use “I” statements instead of blaming or criticizing your partner. For example, say, “I feel hurt when…” rather than, “You always…” This technique helps to avoid triggering defensiveness in your partner and promotes open dialogue. In this blog post, I go deeper into how to do this!
  5. Accept Influence: Be open to accepting influence from your partner. Acknowledge that their perspective is valid and worthy of consideration. Cultivating a mindset of collaboration and mutual respect can lead to quicker resolutions and improve the trust between you.

Overcoming defensiveness in marriage is crucial for nurturing understanding, trust, and emotional connection in your relationship.

By using the tips above you can break the cycle of defensiveness in marriage and create a space for healthier communication. Remember, it takes practice and patience, but the rewards are worth it. You deserve an amazing relationship and I know you are capable of putting in the work to make it happen, my friend! Often the first step is noticing you are feeling or acting defensive and saying something like “I can tell I am getting defensive about this, let me start over”.
