10 Easy Habits for a Happy Marriage

Before I jump into sharing the ten habits for a happy marriage, I’ve got to say that like most things in life, the little things matter—the small gestures, the consistent actions, the everyday habits. And the same is true for marriage. Much like the compound effect in personal growth, these habits accumulate over time, adding to your marriage’s overall happiness and success.

As a couples therapist, I’ve witnessed firsthand how these simple acts of love and connection can transform average relationships into happy marriages. Let’s explore ten easy habits for a happy marriage that you can start trying out today.

1. Kiss Goodbye Every Time Your Partner Leaves

A kiss goodbye may seem like a routine gesture, but its significance goes far beyond a simple peck on the lips. It’s a symbol of affection, a reminder of your love, and a promise to reconnect later in the day. By making it a habit to kiss your partner goodbye before they leave, you set a positive tone for the day ahead.

A German study from the 1980s stated that “men who kissed their wives leaving for work lived, on average, five years longer, earning 20 to 30 percent more than peers who left without a peck good-bye.”

2. Text Your Partner When You’re on Your Way Home from Work

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in the busyness of life and overlook the importance of communication. Sending a text message to your partner as you’re heading home from work may seem like a small gesture, but it communicates thoughtfulness and consideration. It lets your partner know that you’re thinking of them, that you’re looking forward to seeing them, and that they matter to you even in the midst of their busy day.

3. Call Just to Check-In

In addition to texting, taking the time to call your partner just to check in a few times a week can make a world of difference in your relationship. Whether it’s a quick call during your lunch break or a spontaneous check-in during the day, hearing your partner’s voice can be incredibly reassuring and comforting. It shows that you care about their well-being and that you’re actively invested in their life.

4. Remember Birthdays and Plan Something Special

Celebrating milestones like birthdays is an opportunity to show your partner how much they mean to you. Make it a habit to remember their birthday and plan something special to celebrate the occasion. Set an alarm on your phone to remind you two weeks and one day before so you have time to think about and plan something special.

It could be a surprise dinner date, a thoughtful gift, or a heartfelt gesture that reflects their interests and passions. By acknowledging and honoring their birthday, you’re affirming their importance in your life and creating cherished memories together.

5. Make Your Partner a Cup of Coffee/Tea Every Morning

Another one of the habits for a happy marriage is to brew a cup of coffee or tea for your partner. This simple act of kindness not only demonstrates your thoughtfulness but also sets a warm and inviting atmosphere for the day ahead. Whether it’s a steaming mug of coffee in bed or a freshly brewed pot waiting in the kitchen, this gesture shows your partner that you care about their comfort and well-being from the moment they wake up.

6. Go on a Date Twice a Month

Even with all the demands of work, family, and other responsibilities, it’s important to prioritize quality time with your partner. Make it a habit to schedule regular date nights at least twice a month. Whether it’s a romantic dinner at your favorite restaurant, a leisurely stroll in the park, or a fun activity you both enjoy at home, these date nights provide an opportunity to reconnect, communicate, and strengthen your bond as a couple. 7. Ask an Open-Ended Question About Your Partner’s Day

Communication is key to a healthy and fulfilling marriage. Make an effort to ask your partner open-ended questions about their day and genuinely listen to their responses. Open-ended questions are ones where the answer isn’t yes or no. By showing a deeper interest in their thoughts, feelings, and experiences, you create space for meaningful conversations and deeper connections.

Examples of open-ended questions:

  • What was the best part of your day?
  • If you could relive one moment from today, what would it be?
  • What was the hardest part of your day today?

8. Hold Hands When Walking

Physical touch is a powerful way to express love and affection in a marriage. Get into the habit of holding hands when walking together, whether it’s a stroll in the neighborhood or a romantic outing. This simple gesture creates a sense of closeness and connection, reminding you both of the bond you share as partners.

Research shows that holding hands with someone you love can lower blood pressure, reduce pain and buffer stressful experiences.

9. Say “I Love You” Every Day

Never underestimate the power of those three little words: “I love you.” Make it a daily habit to express your love and affection for your partner with these simple words. Whether it’s a whispered declaration in the morning, a quick text during the day, or a loving affirmation before bed, saying “I love you” reaffirms your commitment to each other and can soothe anxieties about the relationship.

10. Put Your Phone Away When You’re with Your Partner

The final thing on our list of habits for a happy marriage is to limit your screen time in the presence of your spouse. In today’s digital age, smartphones have become constant companions in our daily lives. However, excessive screen time can detract from quality time spent with your partner. Make a conscious effort to put your phone away when you’re together, whether it’s during meals, conversations, or leisure activities. By prioritizing being present over being on your phone, you create space for genuine connection and meaningful interactions with your partner.
